In September 2016 we embarked on a new adventure here at Wave and employed our first ever apprentices. Our apprenticeship programme is for 12 months but in order to give the apprentices a full introduction to the company we are letting them split the first 6 months spending equal time in our 3 departments, then after that they will each be assigned to one department to spend the remaining 6 months in.
We may be slightly biased but we think they’re all brilliant and are doing amazingly well so far. We’ve got them to say in their own words how they’ve been getting on.
During my first two months at Wave I have been in the Digital department. I feel that this department has suited me well as I love being creative, and offered me many chances to do so. I have enjoyed my time in Digital, and could definitely see myself working in this department in the future. My favourite time spent within digital has been working with the designers in the studio, as they have offered me a lot of support and inspiration for projects, as well as helped grow my interest and enthusiasm within the design aspect of the company. Although I already had an understanding of Adobe packages such as Photoshop and InDesign, working in the digital department has taught me many skills and boosted my confidence with the packages, as well as introduced me to new ones.
The digital department has given me many skills that will benefit me in the future, whether that is with this company or for another one. For example, I have learnt to use tools such as Google Analytics, Google Adwords, Hootsuite, and Hotjar. I have also put this in to practice by creating my own reports for websites based on their performance by using these tools. Not only this, but I have managed an internal project for our website using Teamwork. I have been given the task of organising our client Christmas party, coming up with themes and setting up sponsorship packages. I have been designing email invites for the event and organising entertainment. I am looking forward to carrying out the Christmas party, as I feel it will be very rewarding seeing all of my plans come together.
I have very much enjoyed my time working in my first department, and am also looking forward to working in the others and learning more about the company as a whole.
I was quite nervous going into work on my first day at Wave – as it turned out I needn’t have been – everyone I met was so friendly and helpful that I soon relaxed. I was also a bit overdressed! It hadn’t occurred to me that even when dressed casually you can still be professional.
My first eight weeks have been spent in RS-Direct learning the bread and butter of the company. I found this experience enlightening as I got to learn right from the bottom up. Being in RS-Direct I have been the middle man between media and our clients which has been a great way to develop my communication and technology skills.
Working in RS-Direct means I have also been exposed to several other areas of Wave which has helped me get to know the team. I’m looking forward to the next eight weeks in RS-Agency building up my experience and expanding my knowledge.
From what I can see I am going to enjoy the next eight weeks as much as the last eight weeks and I’m really looking forward to it.
After being at Wave for 2 months now, I have been warmly welcomed into the family work unit, been introduced to the major job boards and been treated to a free pizza lunch .The perks of this job have been great, nonetheless the training has been good too, with progress and learning happening every day. What I am getting out of this apprenticeship is amazing.
The apprenticeship structure is well planned with me being in three different departments over a span of 6 months. The first 2 months I have seen myself get more confident with admin work and calling clients within the RS-Agency department. The next department is Digital where I can apply my creative skills in web and design development and also get a real feel of digital marketing. I am looking forward to see what the next few months will include.
